Great Customer Service! Thanks Excite! (for nothing) (Excite mail sucks)

28 Jul

Many of you have been following the Excite mail saga. This is the latest installment. I got this e-mail from Excite. Mind you I had a hard time opening it, because an ad on the page kept redirecting the craptacular Internet Explorer before I could read the whole thing.

I am however a little hopeful after reading this. It says that they are working on a “lite” version– so maybe that will be an improvement over the current abomination incarnation. It also says that they are considering our suggestions and complaints. All that does not, however, address my immediate issues. It is absolutely unacceptable for any website to allow ads that hijack my browser. Period. It is ludicrous, given the popularity of alternative browsers and OSes to force your users to use Internet Explorer– that is just sloppy programming and highly unprofessional. To those who would argue that this is what we get for choosing to use a “free” service, I would counter that it is not free. Excite funds their operations with revenue gained from selling advertising space on the pages that I visit. They also get income from people who have payed for upgraded services. From what I’ve been reading on the web, those people have been done an even greater disservice with the new “upgrade.”

Here’s what Excite says, in a nutshell, “We realize that you don’t like the new Excite Email interface. We don’t care. It’s our ball, and if you don’t want to play by our rules, then we’ll just take it and go home. Your mamma’s ugly and she wears combat boots!”

Here’s the e-mail in it’s entirety (note the fact that quotation marks didn’t render correctly–how’s that for quality control?) :

We are aware that many users are having difficulty navigating through the features of the new Excite Email. In an effort to help you access every feature and make your transition to the new email platform as easy as possible, we have compiled the following answers to the most commonly encountered issues.

*** Can I switch back to the old interface?

The only format for Excite Email going forward will be the current one. While we have no plans to offer a Classic Excite version of our interface, we will forward your suggestions and comments to the appropriate department here at Excite for further consideration.

We are working with our partner provider to offer a “Lite” version that will ease the resource strain on older computers and/or slower connections.

***My email account is missing/being hijacked by another program

As noted within the Excite website and your email account this past month, Excite has begun to upgrade our Email system. We are now partnered with BlueTie who will be providing our new email program, complete with a new interface, brand new features and upgraded storage space.

***Email account is stalled in the loading process and never fully loads

If you are using IE6 to access Excite Email, we have resolved the page issue that caused the page to not load, or stall out while loading.

If this does not resolve the issue, and you have a firewall or similar security program, such as MacAfee, Norton Internet Security, or similar products, this may be causing the situation you are experiencing. We recommend temporarily disabling this software and trying the desired action again. If this corrects the problem, please let us know the product you’re using so we can look into the matter further.

***Can log in to email interface but your Inbox doesn’t load

When you log into your Excite Email, you are brought to the Email hub. In order to see your email, you must click the Email icon at the top of the page.

***Address Book is missing

We are aware that some members’ Address Books were not successfully migrated. We are working to resolve this issue as quickly as possible.

***I am using a Mac with Safari or Opera browsers

Unfortunately, our email program is not compatible with the Safari or Opera browsers at this time. We suggest using the Firefox browser to access your email.

***Enlarge the Inbox area

You can enlarge your Inbox viewing area by minimizing the Message Preview window. To do this, click the “_” button in the upper right corner of the Preview window. You can minimize the Quota and Folders windows in the same manner.

You can also enlarge the window by dragging the left border further to the left.

You can choose to display smaller icons at the top of the page by right-clicking on the header and choosing “small” from the menu, or double clicking in the icon area. This will also enlarge the viewing area.

***Composing email

To compose a new message, click the “New” button.

You can add recipients from your Address Book, by clicking the “To” button on the Compose Mail window. This will open a panel on the left of the window where your Address Book will be displayed.

Alternately, you can use the Auto-complete function by typing in the first few letters of the email address or name of the recipient to bring up the matching Address Book entries.

***Viewing your entire email message

To view your entire email message, double click the subject line of the email and the whole message will open in a new window.

***Viewing older messages in your Inbox

The messages in your Inbox are separated into groups of 10 by default. To access more emails, click the “1-10″ key above your Inbox and select the group of messages you would like to view.

Please let us know if we can be of further assistance.

***Downloading Attachments

Attachments are displayed at the top of your email message under the “To” field. To access an attachment, click the file name. This will enable a download prompt for you to save the attachment to your computer, or to open it directly from the message.

***Mark as Spam

To mark a message as Spam, right click on the email within your Inbox, then select “Flag as Junk” from the menu.

Alternately, you can also “drag” the selected messages with your mouse directly to the Junk folder.

We are aware that selecting a message to mark as Junk will open it within the Message Preview window. We are working with our partner provider with regards to this issue. In the meantime, you can select a message without opening it by holding down the Ctrl button as you click.

***Select multiple messages from the list

You can select multiple messages individually by holding the Crtl key while you select each message.

You can also select an entire group of messages by selecting the first message, holding the Shift key, then clicking on the last message of the group.

Once you have selected the messages you wish, right click on one of the highlighted and select your action from the menu.

***Deleting messages

To delete an individual message, right click on the message in question and select “Delete” from the menu.

You can select multiple messages to delete individually by holding the Crtl key while you select each message.

You can also select an entire group of messages by selecting the first message, holding the Shift key, then clicking on the last message of the group.

Once you have selected the messages you wish, right click on one of the highlighted and select your action from the menu.

Alternately, you can “drag” the selected messages with your mouse to the Trash folder, or simply click the Delete icon at the top of the window.

***Empty Trash

You can manually empty your Trash folder by right-clicking on it and selecting “Empty” from the menu.

You can also set your Trash to automatically empty at the interval of your choice. To access these settings, please follow these steps:

- Click the “Preferences” link in the upper right corner of the screen

- Under the Email heading, click the “General Settings” link

- Scroll down to the “Cleanup” section and select the interval of choice from the drop-down menu

- When you have finished, click the “Save” button in the upper left corner of the settings window.

***Adjust Spam filter settings

To adjust your Spam filtering levels, please follow these steps:

- Click the “Preferences” link in the upper right corner of the screen.

- Within the “Preferences” module, click the “Junk Mail Controls” link under the “Email” heading

- Under the “Junk Mail Restriction” section, use the drop down box to select the level of filtration you would like for your account

- When you have finished, click the “Save” button in the upper left corner of the module

Gentlemanbeggar, I just checked the boards and although I am unable to leave a comment, I wanted to let you know that I received the same messages. I contacted Excite and also left them a few more “love notes”. This has gotten out of hand and I am in the process of forwarding my important mail to my gmail account. Lesson learned. – Nards

…AND I’m gonna go one better! I hope you don’t mind, but I left them a link to your blog responses and told them to “feel the love” from their “fan” club. The message to them was not inflammatory nor was it flattering. They just need to see the truth. – Nards

What a mess! I guess getting 1200 spam messages a day in my Yahoo! account isn’t so bad since it’s a simple and pleasant interface. Best wishes.

Can you let me know what the address is to Excite?
I can’t find it and yet would like to give them a piece of my mind too!
Thank you for sharing their response.

I’ve had the same problem as Mark in that no emails have reached me since last Thursday and customer service won’t get back to me. As of 10 minutes ago, I can’t even log into my email! I’ve been with Excite for 11 years, but this is the last straw!

I have been with excite for about 12 years. I have not had too many problems with them. One thing that has happened over the years is that not everyone can send me email. The trouble today is that I cannot get into my account. It tells me that I will be able to get in in 10 seconds while they are dealing with my account. Hmmmm, this is the longest ass 10 seconds I have ever lived in my life. I don’t know what time device they are using but it has been roughly five hours according to “normal” time devices.

New Excite email is a mess. I have had nothing but trouble since it changed. I can’t even get my email addresses to export to gmail. I guess I will just have to load them one at a time. I have used excite for over 10 years, and I am furious over this change. What were they thinking? I don’t mind commercials, but I now have about three inches on the right half of my computer for messages and the rest is junk. Gmail, here I come!

I’ve a Premium Excite account and I haven’t been able to access it via the web for 2 weeks – I need to get at my folders! Who can I email about this? Anyone know.

Count me in as someone who is PO-ed.

My problem is the hang of the download (of a .js module?) typically at 13%, or if I’m “lucky” at 16%.

It hangs for IE or Firefox on
    Windows 98
    Windows 2000
    Windows XP

But on a 4th computer, and old one with Windows 98, I can get it to work with IE6 (has Norton A/V active).

I feel sorry for Mac users. They can’t get to it via Opera or Safari.

For what it’s worth, if you have an old PC you can just about forget using excite’s email from now on. The PC that I’ve got it (barely) working with is pegged at 100% CPU. It’s a W98 machine, 400 MHz AMD K6, which is admittedly slow these days, but is still able to work with Yahoo, Lycos, and Gmail.

I’m not kidding when I say that this could be the death of excite.com.

I must comment once again on excite and their complete lack of regard for their users. I hate the new format and would like the old one back. I think that they should let us decide if we want to use the new or stick with the old. I hope they get their heads out of their asses and listen to the people who give them their jobs.

I agree with ALL the above!! Excite has been my main online mail (NOT important mail)prog for 9 years. I use OE for my Roadrunner account(all important E-mails)although the new Excite Mail resembles OE at first …It is far from OE in usability. 1st off: Slow as a MoFo on my 32 bit system (because it has to now transfer more data back and forth to the BlueTie Servers. 2nd: BlueTie seems to be begging me to put ALL my important e-mails,planers, Calenders, etc on this new system. Hmmm…All my important info on a BlueTie Server where they can really keep track of as many of my online and e-mail habits as possible. They can even riffle thru all my important info for me to tell me if it is spam or not.
I wanted to use my yourass.com email instead and they have changed to the BlueTie also!!!
Why do I feel like I’m lined up naked with many others waiting for my shower? Web 2.0 Gotta love it.

I think the answer is simple. Cancel your accounts. I’m about to. I’ve used Excite for, I don’t know, 10, 15 years? Can we all say “SLOOOOOW”? Can’t load in emails to read quickly, can’t find a “select all” choice to delete more than a few emails at a time, their “Help” doesn’t. I don’t have enough life left to spend wading through their new crap so I use it only for junk stuff and never even log onto it any more. Can’t find a contact method but, clearly, they don’t give a crap. Must be a write-off for the owners. If I can figure out how, I’m cancelling. Sorry for you Premium guys. I need a “junk” service. Signed up for Fastmail but it’s soggy, too, altho not as totally hostile. Yahoo screwed up their fact about the same time but, giving a damn, they allow you to keep the “classic”, or old face. I use them a lot and will continue to.

Well so much for fast responses by customer service. It is now a week later. Excite has still not posted the MLB scores for 9/9/2008 or 9/10/2008.
    Also, MYSCOREs – shows all the baseball reports for Aug. 13;
WRONG – yesterday was Sep. 10.

I’m switching my mail to my verizon account. Wish we could let Excite’s advertisers know just how many are leaving. I’ve been too patient….

Does anyone know how to delete things in the excite address book…groups etc? I want to delete their mail service but keep the front page with my tv schedule etc.

Spot on Mr. GB, Spot on!

I have a 8 MB connection, a new fast machine with 4 Gb and a fast processor. What do I get:

    Loading…

I am soooo sick of the new and improved Excite webmail (which I’ve used for well over a decade) that I have abandoned using it.

I created a rule to forward all email to a new gmail account, then read it there.

I am very unsatisfied with the new format. Have been on excite for over 10 years and the saying “it sucks” is correct. I had my address book on and all of a sudden it disappeared. How do I find it again? Would appreciate some kind of info or a reply to my problem. I figured out how to delete and get rid of all the junk mail, but can’t find out how to find my address book.

I have similar issues with Excite mail . . . it has disappeared some of my mail folders and will not give them back. I go to try and recreate a folder with the same name and it says “A folder with that name already exists.” Very troublesome indeed.

Gentlemanbeggar, would you please send me the email address you have been using to correspond with them?

    Thanks!

Hi. I have to tell you, I am so upset at Excite. Is it possible to have all my emails forwarded to another email address? I know there are emails I should have gotten that are lost there somewhere. Please help me because Excite does suck

I was a very happy with excite for many years until they decided to change their email. It sucks and now they have put an ad on my home page that I find disgusting. It’s from Crush Center and it has a banner that says “2 new messages One of your buddies has a crush on you”.

Who needs crap like that, if they are trying to ruin a good thing they did. I’m in the process of moving my email and home page over to Yahoo or Google,I still playing with both.

I wish there was a way to contact Excite and tell them how they have screwed up their site but they have isolated themselves from criticism, great management decision, who cares what we think.

I thought was the only one (since nobody in my circle use Excite.com). I decided to “move out” now after 15 years of relationship with Excite. Does anyone know if there is a way to “export” emails from this disappointing account? Or forwarding is the only way?

    Many thanks!

Also when then changed their email I hated it. It takes forever to go thru the mail and forever to get the things deleted. I just hate this new email.

don’t know that i “hate” the new email features or format, I just wish it would actually load my email in the first place.

I’ve used excite for about 13 years, at least 3 years longer than i should have. i have a number of site registrations tied to my excite account, and so it has been difficult to get rid of.

Excite may revoke your privileges, terminate your registration/account or take any other measures deemed by Excite to be appropriate, in its sole discretion, to enforce these Terms of Service if violations are brought to our attention.

In addition to any other rights or remedies available to it, Excite reserves the right to immediately suspend, terminate, access and investigate the email or user account of any user upon receipt of a subpoena or law enforcement request, or when Excite believes, in its sole discretion, that a user is transmitting or is otherwise connected with the distribution of unsolicited bulk email messages (SPAM) or any harassing email messages, or with any fraudulent, misleading or illegal activities. Because of the difficulty associated with quantifying damages, if actual damages cannot be reasonably calculated then you agree to pay Excite liquidated damages of $5 for each piece of unsolicited bulk Email transmitted from or otherwise connected with your account or the maximum liquidated damages permitted under law, whichever is greater; otherwise you agree to pay Excite’s actual damages, to the extent such actual damages can be reasonably calculated.

    Email/Forum Privacy

It is our policy to respect the privacy of all users. Therefore, in addition to our Privacy Policy, we and our service partners will not monitor, edit, or disclose the contents of a user or member e-mail unless required in the course of normal maintenance of the Excite Services and its systems, or in our good-faith belief that such action is necessary to: (1) comply with the law or comply with legal process served on Excite; (2) protect and defend the rights or property of Excite; or (3) act in an emergency to protect the personal safety of our users or the public. You shall remain solely responsible for the content of your messages.

Notwithstanding the foregoing, in order to permit Excite to protect the quality of its products and services, you hereby consent to Excite employees being able to access your account and records on a case by case basis to investigate complaints or other allegations or abuse. Excite shall not disclose the existence or occurrence of such an investigation unless required by law.

You should consider all Forum communications to be public and not private communications. Although Excite reserves the right to remove without notice any Forum posting for any reason, we have no obligation to delete content that you may find objectionable or offensive. By uploading materials to any Forum or submitting any materials to us, you automatically grant (or warrant that the owner of such materials has expressly granted) us and our service partners a perpetual, royalty-free, irrevocable, non-exclusive right and license to use, reproduce, modify, adapt, publish, translate, and create derivative works from and distribute such materials or incorporate such materials into any form, medium, or technology now known or later developed throughout the universe. In addition, you warrant that all so-called “moral rights” in those materials have been waived.

Excite reserves the right to monitor some, all, or no areas of the Forums for adherence to these or other rules that may be published from time to time. You acknowledge that by providing you with the ability to distribute content, Excite is acting as a passive conduit for such distribution and Excite is not undertaking any obligation or liability relating to any content or activities in any Forum or email.

Email Storage and Delivery; Termination of Inactive Accounts

The amount of Email storage space per member may be limited. Email accounts may be archived at such time intervals as IWON or its third party service provider(s) determine in their sole discretion. Some Email messages may not be processed due to space constraints, outbound message limitations or disruptions in the system(s). You agree that IWON is not responsible or liable for the deletion or failure to store messages or other information.

Email accounts may be terminated and/or deleted from our system if they remain inactive for a period of ninety (90) or more days. In the event of a suspension or deletion of an email account, messages (whether sent, received, in draft form or archived) and address book entries will no longer be accessible.

    Submissions

If, on your own or at our request, you submit content (e.g., postings to Forums, responses to surveys, etc.), communications, creative suggestions, ideas, notes, drawings, or other information (collectively, “Submissions”), you hereby grant to Excite and its affiliates a royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable, sub-licensable, transferable, worldwide license to use, copy, modify, incorporate into other works, display, perform, transmit and distribute such Submissions or any portion thereof, in or through any medium, whether now known or hereafter created.. Excite shall be entitled to unrestricted use of the Submissions for any purpose whatsoever, commercial or otherwise, without compensation to the submitter. None of the Submissions shall be subject to any obligation of confidence on the part of Excite, and Excite shall not be liable for any use or disclosure of any Submissions. You represent and warrant that you own the contents of any Submission or otherwise have sufficient rights in the Submission to grant to Excite the license set forth above.

After 15 years, I have to finally throw in the towel. I loved loved loved Excite until the new “upgraded” email and now, it’s more than the worse email account out there. I can’t believe that they would ruin their own brand name by making such a ridiculous move as they did to change a great email service. I can’t imagine that there new system has created any new business for them, and I’m sure they lost a lot. Grade A dumb move. Way to go Excite!
