This is a work in process. Inspired by the book "Bold Visions", I decided to try my hand at an Eternian sunrise. This is about 1 1/2 hours of painting. It still needs some work, but I just wanted to share my progress anyway.

About 45 minutes in Smoothdraw 3. I just finished Batman Arkham Asylum on PS3 and felt inspired to try my hand at painting the Dark Knight. It’s definitely a subject I’ll be revisiting.

This is just the result of me fiddling around with a new drawing program, SmoothDraw3. This was a quick 20 minute sketch of my wife relaxing with her laptop.

I might be a bit biased for this book because I painted the cover, but I found the book to be a great light hearted romp in fantasy. In the tradition of the Eddy Bear mysteries and the Dirk Gently mysteries, Mullaney turns the detective novel on its ear. The lovable but gruff detective, Crag Banyon has been framed for the murder of one of Santa’s little helpers, and it leads him on a journey through the seedier side of the North Pole.

Mullaney does a great job of breathing new life into familiar figures and breaking down your preconceived notions of the holidays. There’s a chase scene near the end that isn’t to be missed. If you enjoy detective stories mixed with a healthy dose of humor, you’ll likely find this to be a grand romp!

After posting the original, I noticed a glaring error–the kind of mistake you make when you’ve stayed up late painting instead of going to bed. The mast was on the wrong side of the sails! So, I fixed it. I also touched up the waves a bit. Again, the colour was punched up a bit using my gmic filter, "60′s Cinema FX" set to "Carey Grant"

This is a quick 1 hour speedpainting of a couple of ships stuck in a storm. I’ve always wanted to paint one of these pictures, and I think this is a theme I’m likely to revisit as my skills improve. I painted it in the gimp with my wacom, punching the colour up a touch using my gmic filter "60s cinema fx" set to "Carey Grant."

This started out as a speed painting, but the further I got into it, the longer it took. What you see is about 4 hours of tweaking, fiddling, and adjusting. Painted in the Gimp using "Medal of Honor: Frontline" ps2 game cover as reference. I tweaked the grain and colour a bit, using GMIC and my 60′s Cinema FX set to "Carey Grant"

I wasn’t pleased with my previous attempt at the Hulk. This time, I opted to work with a reference shot. It was all freehand in the Gimp, taking about 2 hours total. I punched up the colour a bit using my "Modern Cinema FX" filter in G’MIC.

This is about 2 hours of work, split into 2 sessions. After painting and colouring, I ran GMIC and my Modern Cinema FX set at "feel the heat" to get what you see here. I’m trying really hard to find that balance between "too little" detail and "just enough."
