What is this bird?

What is this bird?, originally uploaded by gentlemanbeggar.

I’ve never seen one of these before. Saw him when I pulled in and had to snap off a shot. I have no clue what kind of bird it is, but he sure is fun to watch when he walks.

Edit: Apparently, it is an “American Woodcock.” Thanks to redditor “OsoGato” for clarifying!

Thanks for sharing the identity of this unfamiliar bird. I, too, had never seen one before, so I had to check him out in Wikipedia and love his alias: Timberdoodle! Wikipedia also has a picture of a newborn chick timberdoodle which is so adorable [for those of you who are animal lovers like me]. Love your photograph and learning something new!

Glad to be of service! I spotted him on the premises a day or two ago, but was finally able to get him out in the open long enough for this shot, and then he flew back into the brush. He’s an elusive little blighter. I find that my renewed interest in photography is also rekindling an interest in birding.
